DRINKING WATER PROTECTION (SAFE WATER FOR SCHOOLS) AMENDMENT ACT, 2016

HER MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of British Columbia, enacts as follows:

This Act amends the Drinking Water Protection Act to ensure British Columbia’s school children are protected from drinking contaminated water. The Act creates a requirement for regular testing of drinking water in schools and the implementation of mitigation strategies if water does not meet the standards.

1 The Drinking Water Protection Act, S.B.C. 2001, c. 9, is amended by adding the following section:

Requirement to test school drinking water

4.3  (1) The Provincial Health Officer must create a regular system of tests to ensure that drinking water in schools meets the minimum standards set by the Health Canada Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality.

(2) If water does not meet the minimum standards the Provincial Health Officer must implement a mitigation strategy to bring the water into compliance.

 
Explanatory Note
