Legislative Assembly of British Columbia

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 15, 2000

LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE RECOMMENDS
APPOINTMENT OF NEW AUDITOR GENERAL

Victoria, B.C. -- The Special Committee to Appoint an Auditor General has unanimously recommended, in its report to the Legislative Assembly today, that Wayne Strelioff be appointed as the province's new Auditor General.

Mr. Strelioff's appointment follows an open selection process that resulted in applications for the position being received from across Canada. Mr. Strelioff has served as the Provincial Auditor of Saskatchewan since 1990, and has worked extensively in the public sector accounting and auditing fields.

"Wayne Strelioff brings strong management and leadership skills to this very challenging position," said Committee Chair Rick Thorpe (MLA, Okanagan-Penticton). " He has an excellent reputation and we look forward to him taking on this important role."

The Auditor General is a statutory officer of the Legislative Assembly and is independent from government, reporting directly to the Legislative Assembly through the Speaker. The Auditor General is required, under the provisions of the Auditor General Act, to examine the accounts and records of the government and to issue reports to the Legislative Assembly on the management of public funds and the operations of government.

"We were pleased with the level of interest from qualified people across the country" said Deputy Chair Evelyn Gillespie (MLA, Comox Valley). "In the end, the Committee felt that Wayne Strelioff's record of achievements and audit philosophy positioned him well to continue the tradition of excellence established by the current Auditor General, George Morfitt."

Mr. Thorpe and Ms. Gillespie both praised Mr. Morfitt, and thanked him for his twelve years of service to the Province. They noted in particular his achievements in the area of improved accountability reporting throughout government and his ongoing efforts to ensure that performance measures become part of timely government reporting.

The Legislative Assembly adopted the Committee's report and agreed to recommend to the Lieutenant Governor that Mr. Strelioff be appointed as British Columbia's third Auditor General in modern history. He will begin his six-year appointment on May 1, 2000.
