WEDNESDAY, MARCH 22, 1995

Morning Sitting

Volume 17, No. 14

The House met at 11:04 a.m.

Prayers.

M. de Jong: I have two introductions today. In the precincts are 21 students from Miyako city in the Iwate prefecture in Japan. I wonder if my colleagues in the House would make those students welcome in Victoria.

Also joining us in the House today is Mr. John Van Dongen. Mr. Van Dongen resides in the community and constituency of Abbotsford. He is the Liberal candidate and aspires to fill the empty seat on this side of the House. He'll get that chance, of course, as soon as the Premier gets around to calling a by-election in the Abbotsford constituency. Please make him welcome.

J. Beattie: I'd like the House to welcome my son, Cedric Beattie.

V. Anderson: I'd like the House to join me in welcoming Sylvia Russell and Paul Whitehouse, who both helped to establish and run the Vancouver Food Bank for many years.

D. Schreck: Hon. Speaker, I ask the House to join me in welcoming the potentially 30 million people who can now observe this Legislature on the Internet. This is thanks to the good work of your offices in bringing up a World Wide Web page of Hansard and bills on the Internet for this session. Thank you, hon. Speaker, and welcome to our World-Wide friends.

G. Farrell-Collins: I'd like to introduce two people to the House today. Mr. Reni Masi, the president of the British Columbia Liberal Party, is with us and Lois Mor, the one who does all the work in my constituency office.

The Speaker: Hon. members, I have the honour of presenting documents: a special report of the ombudsman on the Nikki Merry case; the report of the chief electoral officer on the by-elections in the Vancouver-Quilchena and Matsqui electoral districts; the report of the annual audit of the office of the auditor general for the year ended March 31, 1993; auditor general report No. 1, 1994-95, on purchasing in school districts; auditor general report No. 2, 1994-95, on the Provincial Agricultural Land Commission; auditor general report No. 3, 1994-95, Report on the 1993-94 Public Accounts, Province of British Columbia; and the 1993-94 annual report of the Commission on Resources and Environment to the Legislative Assembly.

It's my understanding, hon. members, that His Honour the Lieutenant-Governor is about to enter the chamber.

Prorogation Address

Hon. D.C. Lam (Lieutenant-Governor): Hon. Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly, in closing this third session of the thirty-fifth parliament of British Columbia, I wish to commend you on the accomplishments of last year. I also wish to express my appreciation on behalf of all British Columbians for the care and attention you have given to your deliberations. I now relieve you of your legislative duties.

Hon. C. Gabelmann: Hon. Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly, it is His Honour the Lieutenant-Governor's will and pleasure that the Legislative Assembly be prorogued until 2 p.m. today, and this provincial Legislative Assembly is hereby prorogued accordingly.

His Honour the Lieutenant-Governor retired from the chamber.

The House prorogued at 11:14 a.m.
