Presentations on
Dismissal Process Reviews

G. Chow (Chair): Well, good evening, everyone. I’m George Chow, and I’m the MLA for Vancouver-Fraserview and also the Chair of the Special Committee to Review Provisions of the Public Service Act.

I’d like to acknowledge that we are meeting today on the legislative precinct in Victoria, which is located on the unceded territory of the lək̓ʷəŋən-speaking peoples, known as the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations.

The committee is reviewing provisions of the Public Service Act relating to dismissal process reviews by the Merit Commissioner.

Today we’ll be receiving a presentation from an individual, and given that this individual is currently pursuing legal action related to the dismissal, the committee will move in camera for this presentation. This is in accordance with the sub judice convention, which provides that the Legislative Assembly does not comment on matters before a court of law to avoid prejudicing proceedings not before the assembly. This convention is outlined on pages 175 to 177 and also page 353 of the Parliamentary Practice in British Columbia, fifth edition.

Following the presentation, the committee will proceed to deliberations.

Before we go ahead, I introduced myself…. I would also like to invite the co-Chair to introduce himself.

M. Morris (Deputy Chair): Mike Morris. I’m the MLA for Prince George–Mackenzie.

M. de Jong: Mike de Jong, MLA for Abbotsford West.

H. Sandhu: I’m Harwinder Sandhu, MLA for Vernon-Monashee.

G. Chow (Chair): Joining us online is MLA Roly Russell.

R. Russell: Hi. Roly Russell, MLA for Boundary-Similkameen.

G. Chow (Chair): Later on, we’ll also have another member, who is actually in another meeting, who will be joining us a bit later. Nick Simons will be joining us.

Can I have a motion to go into camera, please?

Motion approved.

The committee continued in camera from 7:05 p.m. to 8:28 p.m.

[G. Chow in the chair.]

G. Chow (Chair): Okay. Any other business?

Seeing no further business, I would entertain a motion to adjourn.

Motion approved.

The committee adjourned at 8:28 p.m.
