Election of Chair and Deputy Chair

K. Riarh (Committee Clerk): All right, Members. I’d like to call this meeting of the Select Standing Committee on Children and Youth to order.

As this is the first meeting of the committee for the third session of the 42nd parliament, it is my honour, as Committee Clerk, to oversee the election of a Chair.

Do we have any nominations for Chair of the committee?

F. Donnelly: I’ll nominate Jinny Sims.

K. Riarh (Committee Clerk): Jinny, do you accept the nomination?

J. Sims: Yes.

K. Riarh (Committee Clerk): Are there any further nominations? Any further nominations? For a third and final time, any further nominations?

The question is that Jinny take the role of Chair of the committee.

Motion approved.

[J. Sims in the chair.]

K. Riarh (Committee Clerk): Congratulations, Chair.

J. Sims (Chair): Thank you very much.

Here we are, ready for another roller-coaster ride.

We will now elect a Deputy Chair. I’m looking for nominations.

K. Kirkpatrick: I nominate Mike Bernier.

J. Sims (Chair): Mike, do you accept the nomination as vice-Chair?

M. Bernier: As vice-Chair, yes, I do. Thank you.

J. Sims (Chair): Are there any other nominations? Any other nominations? Any other nominations?

Motion approved.

J. Sims (Chair): Mike, congratulations.

M. Bernier (Deputy Chair): Thank you, Chair. It was a hard-fought campaign.

J. Sims (Chair): This is a very brief meeting, and that was the only business. I do want to welcome both Mike and Norm to the meeting and, also, to welcome everybody else who was here before.

It would be remiss of me if I didn’t do a huge shout-out and thank-you to Coralee Oakes and Mike Morris for their participation on this committee. I know they felt passionate about the issues. They played, really, I would say, as we all do here, a critical role in bringing issues forward. The discussions we had were always respectful and were always in the context of how we can do the best for the children in British Columbia.

I know that Coralee has moved on to other things, as has Mike, but thank you, thank you, thank you.

With that, who is going to move that the meeting be adjourned?

Henry, I know that you’ve been dying to do that.

Moved by Henry and seconded by Karin.

Motion approved.

The committee adjourned at 9:04 a.m.
