Election of Chair and Deputy Chair
S. Sourial (Clerk Assistant, Committees and Interparliamentary Relations): Good afternoon, committee members. As this is our first meeting of the committee in the second session, our first item of business is the election of a Chair.
Are there any nominations for the position of Chair of the committee?
G. Begg: I nominate Mable Elmore.
S. Sourial (Clerk Assistant, Committees and Interparliamentary Relations): Mable, do you accept the nomination?
M. Elmore: Yes, I accept. Thank you.
S. Sourial (Clerk Assistant, Committees and Interparliamentary Relations): Any further nominations? Any further nominations? A third time, any further nominations?
Seeing none, all those in favour of Garry’s motion for Mable?
Motion approved.
[M. Elmore in the chair.]
S. Sourial (Clerk Assistant, Committees and Interparliamentary Relations): Congratulations, Madam Chair.
M. Elmore (Chair): Terrific. Thank you very much, Susan. I appreciate that.
Thank you, Members. It’s a pleasure to join you and reconvene our Special Committee to Review the Personal Information Protection Act.
I’m pleased to be joining you from the traditional territory of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations.
As we kick off our session now in 2021 and undertake our review of the act, I look forward to working with you and to really engaging in a conversation with British Columbians in terms of seeking their input and recommendations to update our act.
The next item on our agenda is to elect a vice-Chair. I’ll ask for nominations. A call for nominations for the position of vice-Chair.
R. Glumac: I nominate Dan Ashton.
D. Ashton: Thank you, Rick.
M. Elmore (Chair): Dan, do you accept?
D. Ashton: I do. Thank you.
M. Elmore (Chair): All right.
I’ll issue a second call for nominations for the position of vice-Chair. And a third call.
Seeing no further nominations, I’ll ask for all those in favour for Dan Ashton as vice-Chair to please indicate.
Motion approved.
M. Elmore (Chair): Congratulations, Dan. I look forward to….
D. Ashton (Deputy Chair): Thank you, Mable.
Thank you very much. I look forward to working with everybody. As we go down this path again, and with what’s happening in the world and all this phishing stuff…. I was just up at our bank, going through the ATM machine. They have a big note up there, at the Royal Bank, about the phishing that has been taking place. So letting everybody know. It’s amazing what’s happening out there.
I look forward to working with everybody.
Thank you very much, Rick, for the nomination. I appreciate it.
M. Elmore (Chair): Terrific. Thank you, Dan.
Certainly, ahead of us, we have a lot of ground to cover this year.
Dan, you mentioned just the breathtaking changes happening across technology, on all fronts, keeping pace with C-11 on the national front.
I’m looking forward to working with all members on the committee to undertake a very dynamic consultation process and enter into deliberations and submit our final report, for consideration, to the Legislative Assembly later this year.
Next on the agenda. Are there any other items that any member would like to raise?
Other Business
A. Wilkinson: I’ve come across…. There’s an organization that was founded in about 1967 that, until the 2008 era, was called the Information Systems Audit and Control Association, ISACA. They now just go by ISACA.
They have quite an active Vancouver chapter. If you just put in ISACA Vancouver, you’ll get a very glamorous website with all of the details of what they’re up to, chapter bylaws, etc. I’ve been in secondhand contact with these folks. They’re interested in participating in the committee.
I think what I’m asking is: can we agree to send them a letter to see if they are interested in providing input?
M. Elmore (Chair): Yeah. That sounds like a great idea, Andrew.
Susan, can we add them to the list and ensure that they receive the information and ask for their input?
S. Sourial (Clerk Assistant, Committees and Interparliamentary Relations): Definitely. Yup.
M. Elmore (Chair): That’s a great suggestion, Andrew.
Does anyone else have any other organizations that you’ve come across or any other items you’d like to raise?
S. Sourial (Clerk Assistant, Committees and Interparliamentary Relations): I will advise members that we sent an initial email to all stakeholders on March 18. We will be sending a second one in the coming, I’d say, week or so. We’re hoping to open the consultation portal for registration towards the end of April.
A. Wilkinson: Susan, I’ll just contact you directly, later this afternoon, with the contact for this ISACA person.
S. Sourial (Clerk Assistant, Committees and Interparliamentary Relations): Perfect. Thank you.
M. Elmore (Chair): Thank you, Susan.
Thank you, Andrew.
Certainly, once the information goes out, we can encourage all members of the Legislative Assembly to forward to…. We’ll ensure that they get information through their offices and that they also forward them out through their networks. We want to ensure that we get the information out as broadly and widely as possible and encourage folks to participate in the consultation. So thank you very much.
Now, Susan, was there anything else that you wanted to update us on?
S. Sourial (Clerk Assistant, Committees and Interparliamentary Relations): No. That’s it, Madam Chair. Thank you.
M. Elmore (Chair): Okay, everybody. It looks like that’s our agenda for the day. Thank you very much. I look forward to undertaking this work with all of you and wish you the best in the day ahead and look forward to seeing you in the near future.
Motion to adjourn?
D. Ashton (Deputy Chair): So moved.
Motion approved.
The committee adjourned at 1:41 p.m.
