The committee met at 9:02 a.m.
Election of Chair and Deputy Chair
K. Ryan-Lloyd (Clerk Assistant and Committee Clerk): Good morning, Members. Welcome to the first committee meeting in the first session of the 39th parliament of the Select Standing Committee on Children and Youth. My name is Kate Ryan-Lloyd. I'm going to serve as the Clerk to your committee this session.
As this is the first meeting of the committee in the new session and there is not yet a Chair elected to serve this committee, the first item of business on your agenda is the election of Chair. I'd like to open the floor to nominations.
L. Krog: I'd like to nominate Joan McIntyre to be Chair of the committee.
K. Ryan-Lloyd (Committee Clerk): Ms. McIntyre, would you accept nomination?
J. McIntyre: I do. Thank you very much.
K. Ryan-Lloyd (Committee Clerk): Okay. I will call for nominations three times. Any further nominations? Any further nominations? Any further nominations? Seeing none, I'll put the question on the motion.
Motion approved.
[J. McIntyre in the chair.]
K. Ryan-Lloyd (Committee Clerk): Congratulations, Madam Chair.
J. McIntyre (Chair): Thank you very much. This is a new and exciting challenge for me. As some of you know, I've actually not sat on this committee before — suddenly propelled into the chairmanship.
I'm really looking forward to working together — both sides of the House — to further all of our endeavours in terms of making sure we protect the most vulnerable. I'm delighted to accept, and thank you very much.
As you can see from the agenda, we have just small items of business here, although very important items. We don't have terms of reference yet, so we'll just go through our business of electing the Chair and Deputy Chair and our subcommittees, and then we look forward to getting those terms and then moving forward. I'm delighted to be working with the Deputy Chair as we go forward.
I'd like to open the floor for nominations for the Deputy Chair, please.
D. Horne: I nominate Maurine Karagianis.
J. McIntyre (Chair): Maurine, would you stand for Deputy Chair?
M. Karagianis: I would be happy to stand for this position. Thank you.
J. McIntyre (Chair): Excellent. Thank you.
Any other nominations? I'll ask, the same as the Clerk: any other nominations? I'll ask again, for the third time: any other nominations? Hearing none, I'd like to say that we unanimously elected Maurine as the Deputy Chair.
Interjection.
J. McIntyre (Chair): Oh, sorry, I should have the question first.
First order of business — I move the question.
Motion approved.
J. McIntyre (Chair): So a unanimous election. Thank you very much.
Election of Subcommittees
J. McIntyre (Chair): The next thing is…. This committee does have two subcommittees: one for agenda and procedure, and I would like to talk about that; and also a subcommittee that refers to the rep — critical injury and child death.
If all agree, I would like to set that up as two different subcommittees. In discussing things informally with our now Deputy Chair, I think we've come to agreement that we would like to have it be the Chair and Deputy Chair. I guess I have a motion for that as well.
For the subcommittee on agenda and procedure, I'd like to move that it be the Chair and Deputy Chair.
L. Krog: I'll move that motion.
Motion approved.
J. McIntyre (Chair): Okay. Thank you. And then the same for the subcommittee on critical injury and child death referrals. Could I have a mover?
J. Rustad: I'll move that.
J. McIntyre (Chair): Thank you very much, John.
Motion approved.
J. McIntyre (Chair): Thank you very much. This is very short and sweet. But as I say, I look forward to that, and I think the Deputy Chair and I can easily move

ahead, and it'll save you.... It's a little less work on everyone else's part. Anyway, thank you.
Is there any other business that you'd like to say? The Deputy Chair and I, as I say, will look forward to getting our terms of reference and look forward to setting the first meeting and agenda. Just so you know, we're planning to meet with the rep. We'll meet informally with the rep, and then we'll call our first meeting and report back.
Any other questions or…? Okay. Can we adjourn the meeting?
The committee adjourned at 9:06 a.m.
