WEDNESDAY, APRIL 16, 2008

The committee met at 9:04 a.m.

           [R. Cantelon in the chair.]

           R. Cantelon (Chair): I'd like to call the Select Standing Committee on Children and Youth to order.

I'll call shortly for a motion to go in camera so we can test the reports. Craig James has just tapped me on the shoulder to remind me that the room is needed at ten o'clock. We'll have a full agenda, and I'm sure we'll have many questions.

I'd ask to move to go in camera so we can get at this.

           Motion approved.

The committee continued in camera from 9:05 a.m. to 9:56 a.m.

           [R. Cantelon in the chair.]

           N. Simons (Deputy Chair): I just want to say thank you very much. It's the first significant report of this nature coming from the new office. I think it's a significant day, and we appreciate it. I know that the families of these children and other children who have had dealings with child welfare are appreciative of the fact that there is independent oversight.

I've spoken to the grandmother of Sherry Charlie, who also was looking forward to this day, in part because of the need for this type of review. I'm sure we'll have a chance to speak about the specifics of it in more detail when we have more time.

Public Release of Documents
Presented to Committee

           N. Simons (Deputy Chair): At this time I'd like to move that the documents distributed to the committee this morning during our in-camera session be deemed public documents.

I'll name these documents. The first is the one called Amanda, Savannah, Rowen and Serena: From Loss to Learning, a report of the Representative for Children and Youth. The second is known as the RCY Northern Report: MCFD Response to Recommendations. The third is the RCY Northern Report: MCFD General Response. Those two documents are the documents provided by the ministry to the committee members this morning during our in-camera session.

           That is the motion.

           Motion approved.

           R. Cantelon (Chair): We're at the hour. I look for a motion to adjourn.

           This committee stands adjourned.

Thank you for coming, and thank you, Representative.

The committee adjourned at 9:58 a.m.
