TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 2006

The committee met at 9:12 a.m.

           [J. Nuraney in the chair.]

           J. Nuraney (Chair): It is proposed that the committee go in camera so that we can conclude the discussions regarding the report that we are in the process of looking at and approving. So if I may have a motion to that effect.

           Motion approved.

The committee continued in camera from 9:13 a.m. to 11:01 a.m.

           J. Nuraney (Chair): We now resume public session. There is a motion on the floor.

Committee Report to the House

           L. Mayencourt: Chair, I move that the committee adopt the report as amended today and that a subcommittee comprised of the Chair, the Deputy Chair and me be hereby authorized to make final minor editorial changes to the report as required, on behalf of the committee, prior to the deposit of the report on November 30, 2006.

           M. Polak: Seconded.

           N. Macdonald: If we're allowed discussion, I'd just like to say publicly what we have said privately, which is that we very much appreciate the chairmanship that you've provided this group — consistently fair, consistently polite and a gentleman, as you always are. We very much appreciate it.

As well, I'm sure everyone would agree to commend the staff, who have given a wonderful standard of looking after us on the road and everything here. It's just been first-rate. I appreciate it. Certainly, we appreciate the discussion we've had with other members of the group. That's all I wanted to say.

           J. Nuraney (Chair): I appreciate your comments, Norm.

Motion approved on the following division:

YEAS — 4

Lee

Mayencourt

Polak

Rustad

NAYS — 2

Routley

Macdonald

           L. Mayencourt: I move that the Chair present the report to the Legislative Assembly at the earliest available opportunity.

Motion approved on the following division:

YEAS — 4

Lee

Mayencourt

Polak

Rustad

NAYS — 2

Routley

Macdonald

           J. Nuraney (Chair): Do I have a motion to adjourn?

           D. Routley (Deputy Chair): If I could make a comment before the adjournment motion, I'd like to echo the comments of my colleague in congratulating the Chair on the wonderful job that you've done and the staff for bearing with us through the travels and tribulations. Congratulations to the members opposite, who I have enjoyed working and travelling with and have come to know in a different way than we've come to know each other in the House. I think we've all benefited from that.

We do have significant substantive issues with the report and its conclusions and recommendations. We plan to issue a summary which will describe our concerns and perhaps point to some of the deficiencies that we see in the report. We will issue a press release associated with that, but we will deal with this issue with respect to the other members of the committee and to the work that we've done. We will undertake not to disclose any information that was shared in in-camera meetings, and we will not precipitate the release of the report in any way. Any comment we make will come after the public release of the report, and all the members of the committee and the Chair can count on our integrity in that way.

           J. Nuraney (Chair): Comments noted.

Once again, a motion to adjourn.

           Motion approved.

           J. Nuraney (Chair): The meeting stands adjourned.

The committee adjourned at 11:05 a.m.
